National Hunger and Homelessness

 Awareness Week

The McLennan County Hunger Coalition and the Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition are once again participating  in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week! Now in its fourth year in Waco, NHHAW hopes to bring awareness to not only local poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness, but also to the state and national issues that affect our citizens. Our 2013 focus is senior hunger. We’d love for you to participate in any – if not all — of our week’s events! Please spread the word! Let’s end hunger and homelessness in our community!

Our 2013 NHHAW Calendar is available for download!

Saturday, November 16th

A Night Without A Home

Kickoff National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week by spending a night without a home next to the Salvation Army men’s and women’s shelters and learn more about the experiences of men and women who experience homelessness every day.

The night will begin with dinner at the Salvation Army’s Community Kitchen at 5:30 pm. After dinner, those participating will walk over to the “camp-site” behind the men’s shelter where we will set up sleeping bags or cots for those who request them. During the evening participants will hear from men and women who are currently experiencing homelessness and someone who is formerly homeless. The event will conclude with breakfast the next morning at 8:30am.

If interested, please RSVP to Sarah Miller at the Salvation Army, 254-756-7271.

*Participants will have access to bathroom facilities inside the Salvation Army warehouse during the night. The sleeping area is fully surrounded by a fence and under an overhang.
